I picked up this link to to Anina’s blog from Scoble. Up until today I had no idea who Anina was but she seems pretty cool. She is a model but also a geek – so she is into gadgets and apparently posing with gadgets!
What I can’t understand is why her agency doesn’t want her to blog. Agencies demand that models provide portfolios to get work – and a blog is a kind of portfolio, but it just proves that whilst you may have legs that go all the way up to there, you also have a brain and an opinion. Maybe its having an opinion that is the problem.
Personally I think a gadget company (or group of companies) need to pick her up as a spokes person to not only model, but also to write about her digital lifestyle – in essence, do what she does now, except allow her to charge BIG$$$ for it.
I’m in two minds about this. First, they didn’t tell her to stop blogging - they told her to stop blogging *about tech stuff*. It doesn’t sound like they have a problem with her blogging.
As much as I think she’s way cool for being into both tech and modelling, I think perhaps the agents have a point.
My MSN handle says “qamuSHa’ Jasmin”, which is Klingon for “I love Jasmin”. One of my closest friends (a girl) laughed and said it was the lamest, geekiest thing, and Jasmin would hate it. But Jasmin thought it was sweet because she likes geeky stuff too - but I realised most people simply don’t.
The majority of people who watch the sort of things Anita is involved in through her agents probably fall into the same category. I think that most of them don’t care for geeky techie things, and so Anita’s side interests will make them lose interest in her - she’d be more successful to the agent if her passion was horses or sky diving, because they’re much cooler than Star Trek or iPods.
The agent is looking out for their bottom dollar, and I think maybe they’ve made the right call.
But I agree with you Mitch. Someone like Sony or Microsoft (for the xBox) or Apple should sign her up. She might make much more money targetting a niche market (us geeks who will adore her) than a much larger market where she might just be an average fish (I don’t know if she’s average or not because I haven’t looked at the pics yet (I’m at work) but I’m just guessing). Maybe she could get a role on Star Trek? In any case, get different agents Anina!
