Mobile Computing in a Tent

Yesterday I decided on a whim to setup our three man dome tent – whilst it was raining. The plan was that I could see whether it was water tight and then today Bella and I could camp out in it overnight as a bit of a new experience for her.

There was a bit of water in the tent this morning due to me not pegging down the outer cover of the tent correctly, but that was easy enough to dry out. Even though its quite windy and there is snow on the mountains in the area its actually quite cosy. It makes me wonder what being a virtual employee whilst travelling around Australia woud look like.

I could imagine scenario where every Friday evening you’d pack up the tent and move to the next down with an Internet cafe or 3G coverage. You’d say there for the week and then continue on your way the following weekend. There are some pretty good mobile generators around now, and running a laptop doesn’t take that much power.

Who will replace Robert Scoble?

By now most of the blogosphere has heard that Robert Scoble is leaving Microsoft to join PodTech. This is pretty big news (as evidenced by the coverage it is getting even in my limited blog reading circles). I think that Microsoft really owes Robert a great big thanks for the way he managed to help the company mount a big turn around in how it is perceived in the tech community.

The King is Dead, Long Live the King!

Someone has to ask the question. Who is going to replace Robert? Microsoft is probably thinking who they are going to use to replace the void left with Roberts departure. The interesting thing is that I think that the intersection of the tech and blogger communities will decide who it is.

My vote would be Frank Arrigo. Frank heads up the DPE team here in Australia but he is so well connected after a 15+ years at Microsoft that he knows what is going on before most people.
