Why won’t FaceBook remember my password?
September 2, 2007
Okay, so I came to FaceBook mid-hype. Used it once then didn’t come back – until people I know started using and started sending me friend invites. So these days I log in to accept a friend request and that is about this – but why am I not getting into it as much as other people?
Well – I think I figured it out. It is absolutely pointless adding FaceBook to my homepage tabs in Internet Explorer. The problem is that the FaceBook guys seem to have deliberate disabled automatic password reminding on Internet Explorer, and they don’t have a “remember me” option on the web page (which would be the ideal). The problem then is that in order to log in to FaceBook, I need to open up my password manager, scroll down to FaceBook and copy the password to the clipboard – and then paste it into the site.
The only sites that I allocate a memorable password to are those that I know that I am going to need to access at some point in the future from a computer that I don’t have my password management software on – and sorry – FaceBook just isn’t in that list of critical sites.
I’m getting to the stage where unless FaceBook changes I’ll probably end up not using it anymore. Now before you post up saying that the Firefox guys have an automatic login Greasemonkey script – I don’t want to use Firefox, AND, stuff like this concerns me.
So if you post to the bottom of this thread saying something like “use Firefox” then you completely missed the point about this being a usability thing. FaceBook – if you are listening, add a Remember Me button!
